14 September 2011 Reading response American record: By Judith Ortiz Cofer Elena is a young Puerto Rican immigrant struggling to see in a society full of stereotypes and racism. At schooldays she strives to fit in with the other kids, the black girls mock her and call her approximate bones, this saddens her, fashioning her feel unwanted. Elena meets a boy at school named Eugene, they two link up to each other because Eugene is also picked on and called The uncomplicated for his southern accent. Elena change surfacetually develops a crush on Eugene and so does he; she finally finds someone she can relate to, forbear her company and make her feel as if brisk in New Jersey is worthwhile. Judith Ortiz does an amazing job making the ratifier think that Elena has found happiness and will blend with no worry from now on. But as I keep to read, the ending shocked me and made me realize this is non a fictional story, its reality. When Elena goes to Eugenes house after he invites her to study, his fix gives her the boot and tell her to leave because Elena lives in the distressing Puerto Rican Immigrant building.

This was a common issue back then where groups of mass popular opinion they were superior to others and didnt allow their children to second immigrants, and sadly in some argonas this steady exists today. Kids are still being picked on and stereotyped, and unfortunately I also went through and through this.
